Meet the Arm Contouring Team

The Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital is led by four consultants working inside a tertiary general hospital. Tongchun Mao, MD, is responsible for the medical review of this site. Choosing between an arm lift and arm liposuction genuinely involves the other three: the revision surgery for an arm already operated on, the honest boundary of what a device can do to loose skin, and the dermatological care of skin that has to settle before it can be operated through.

Tongchun Mao

Tongchun Mao (毛彤春)

Deputy Director & Head of Aesthetic Surgery · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending · Lead Physician of This Site

Aesthetic surgery · arm and body contouring · the surgical boundary

Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team his role is refinement and honest referral: he is the person who says so when an operation will do better than an injectable or a device.

The arm is one of the places where a patient's own description is least reliable, and Dr. Mao's part of this decision is the examination that replaces it. He lifts the skin, asks how it behaves when the arm is raised, and works out whether the fullness is fat that moves with the skin or tissue that does not. Where the complaint is muscle tone, or where weight is still changing, his answer is to wait rather than to operate — and he says so before any plan is discussed.

Clinical focus

  • Examination of arm skin laxity and how far it extends along the limb
  • Arm contouring by skin excision, and what that operation cannot reach
  • Judging when weight stability has to come before any operation
  • Scar placement, and how an arm scar is likely to look years later
  • Arms whose real complaint is muscle tone rather than tissue

The skin does not shrink back

Removing fat from an arm whose skin has already stretched leaves the same envelope with less inside it. That is not a complication of liposuction; it is what liposuction is. The examination is what separates an arm that will tighten from one that will not, and no garment, cream or device changes that answer.

Shaoliang Wang

Shaoliang Wang (王韶亮)

Director, Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center · Vice Chief Physician, Associate Professor, Doctor of Medicine

Plastic surgery · complex cases · revision after arm contouring

Dr. Shaoliang Wang is Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team he provides the surgical perspective and the tertiary-hospital backstop — the assessment when an operation is the honest answer, and the hospital-level care for the rare complication that needs it.

Arms that have had contouring and are unhappy with the result are a distinct problem: the skin has already been removed, or the fat has already gone and the laxity it revealed is now the complaint. Dr. Wang's part of this site is the assessment of those arms, the correction where one is possible, and the hospital-level care for the rare complication — a collection of fluid, a wound that will not close, or a nerve injury — that belongs in a tertiary general hospital rather than an outpatient room.

Clinical focus

  • Center leadership and multidisciplinary case review
  • Surgical assessment when an operation is the honest answer to descent or excess skin
  • Hospital-based care for the rare complication that needs theatre-level management
Ke He

Ke He (何锞)

Deputy Director & Head of Skin & Laser Aesthetics · Attending Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Skin & laser aesthetics · the boundary of what a device can do

Dr. Ke He is Deputy Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital and head of its skin and laser aesthetic service — and she is the lead physician of this site. A core specialist formerly at the Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery Department of Xinqiao Hospital, affiliated with Army Medical University, she has worked on the clinical front line in skin laser and injectable aesthetics for more than 20 years, serving over ten thousand patients.

Arms are frequently presented for a course of tightening on the assumption that it will substitute for removing skin. Dr. He's part of this site is the honest statement of that boundary. A device that heats skin can change its quality; it removes no skin, so it cannot close a fold or shorten an arm that has stretched. Where a patient's real question is what a non-surgical option would do, she answers it against what the operation would achieve rather than instead of it.

Clinical focus

  • Assessment of arm skin before any non-surgical tightening is offered
  • What energy-based tightening can and cannot change on a limb
  • Skin quality and scar management on the arm
Yongbo Jia

Yongbo Jia (贾勇波)

Deputy Director & Head of Dermatology · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Dermatology · skin conditions that delay arm surgery

Dr. Yongbo Jia is a dermatologist within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team his role is medical skin assessment — diagnosing and managing pigment and barrier conditions, and treating skin that a device or an injection has irritated.

Skin that is inflamed, infected or affected by a long-term condition is not skin to operate through, and an arm lift scar runs close to the axilla where those conditions concentrate. Dr. Jia's part of this decision is the dermatological one: treating the skin first, judging when it has settled, and managing the wound or the scar if healing does not go as expected.

Clinical focus

  • Medical skin assessment behind injectable treatment plans
  • Diagnosis and management of pigment and barrier conditions
  • Dermatologic care of skin after irritation or a delayed reaction
